Even though we feel that we have the best hydraulic winches
on the market, they are not immune to the inherent disadvantages that all hydraulic
winches have.
- When used on farm tractors with an oil flow under 20 GPM, the
hydraulic winches tend to be either very slow, or they do not pull well.
- When the oil heats up, hydraulic winches lose a lot of their
pulling capacity. This is particularly common if there is not an oil cooler in the
hydraulic system.
- Hydraulic winches without a clutch are dangerous to use,
therefore, all Farmi winches have an engagement clutch which acts as a "fuse"
which will slip when overloaded. This feature reduces the risk of the cable breaking
or the tractor tipping over.
- Hydraulic winches are usually operated from the tractor seat
so the operator must be in a contorted position to see the hitch he is winching in.
The view from the tractor seat is often very limited. Sitting on the tractor seat is
also dangerous because, should the cable or skid chain break, the parts will then fly
towards the winch, so the operator that is sitting behind the winch is in the path of the
flying parts. The Farmi winches therefore have control ropes which enable the
operator to stand on the ground on either side of the winch where they can see the load,
in a safe place away from the flying parts. This feature also reduces the need to
climb on and off the tractor every time the load gets hung up behind a stump or a tree.
- Hydraulic winches are often sold without a lower snatchblock.
That makes the skidding out of the logs with a farm tractor more dangerous, as the
high point of pull increases the risk for roll-over.
